The Right to Choose in Colombia: Information for International Patients
In Colombia, the right to choose is legally protected. This means that anyone, including international patients, has the legal right to access abortion services safely, confidentially, and without being judged.
Derecho a decidir
El aborto es un derecho que puedes ejercer con autonomía. Por eso, en Mía encuentras una herramienta para conocer y ejercer tus derechos; para decidir sobre tu cuerpo y así poder construir el proyecto de vida que quieres.
Since the 2006 Constitutional Court ruling, abortion in Colombia has been legal under three specific conditions:
- When the pregnancy poses a risk to the life or health of the person.
- In cases of severe fetal anomalies incompatible with life.
- When the pregnancy is the result of rape or non-consensual acts.
In 2022, the Court expanded this right by decriminalizing abortion up to 24 weeks of pregnancy for any reason. After 24 weeks, the original three conditions still apply.

How to Confirm a Pregnancy and Calculate Gestational Age
Confirming pregnancy:
You can do this with a urine or blood test. Keep in mind that urine tests may show a negative result if taken less than two weeks after the last sexual encounter. For early detection, blood tests are generally more reliable.
Calculating the number of weeks of pregnancy:
There are different ways to estimate gestational age:
- If you have regular menstrual cycles every 28–30 days, have not recently used oral contraceptives, and haven’t experienced delays, you can estimate the weeks of pregnancy based on the date of your last menstrual period (LMP).
If your cycles are irregular, you are a trans man who has stopped menstruating, are undergoing gender-affirming hormone therapy, or have used oral contraceptives, gestational age should be determined by a healthcare professional through a clinical or physical exam, or with an ultrasound.
